Funeral set for GIA, Fort Valley State coaching legend Lomax - Atlanta Journal Constitution
Apr 20, 2019
Lomax died on Sunday at age 95. A Fort Valley graduate and World War II veteran, Lomax was the football coach at Risley High in Brunswick, where he led the team to championships in 1950 and 1957 in the all-black Georgia Interscholastic Association. His teams also won two state titles in boys basketball and five in track-and-field state titles at Risley, a school whose rivals include names of the past such as Hunt High in Fort Valley and Ralph Bunch of Woodbine. Lomax left Risley for Fort Valley State, where his teams were 86-33-7 over 14 seasons and won four Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships. Lomax’s most famous player at Fort Valley was Griffin native and former Dallas Cowboys offensive lineman Rayfield Wright. Lomax introduced Wright at Wright’s induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Services will be held at the Pettigrew Center at Fort Valley with interment at Willow Lakes Memorial Gardens. Hicks and Sons Mortuary is handling arrangements. -- Support real journalism. Support local journalism. Subscribe to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution today. See offers.
